Project J
What is Project J?
Project J is a student-organized JSOC initiative through which Carleton journalism students (both undergraduate and graduate) can submit their best recent work for a chance to get published by big-name publications. This year’s partners include CTV News Ottawa, Ottawa Life Magazine, National Post, Faces Magazine, Ottawa Business Journal, Ottawa Citizen, Ontario Farmer and iPolitics.
Project J also features a number of internal cash awards for already published works with exceptional merit.
What type of project can I submit?
Submissions to Project J’s publication categories should be timeless to an extent or in the context of being published in the near future. Daily or breaking news stories will not work due to the timing of when projects will be published.
Submissions to Project J’s internal categories may have been published previously by a student and/or university publication, though not professionally.
Features, profiles, investigative pieces, in-depth analyses, long-forms, and multimedia pieces relevant to Ottawa will be accepted for Project J’s publication categories. We are looking for informative written articles on politics, governance, the arts, cultures, music, sports, regional issues, homes and neighbourhoods, et cetera. However, with the recent addition of publications based outside of Ottawa, we are also welcome to pieces that are focused on Ontario or Canada as a whole.
i’m Pieces in either a written or audio-visual format will be accepted for Project J’s internal categories, and may focus outside the Ottawa area.
How many projects can I submit?
The sky is the limit! Submit as many as you’d like.
Can I submit a class story?
Yes! It is encouraged to submit previous class projects. Though, as mentioned before, if they have been published with other media publications (including Capital Current and the Charlatan), these projects are not eligible for the external categories.
If you are revisiting an older piece that has been published before, please find a new angle to it.
Please note these rules are subject to change prior to the next submission period.
The deadline for Project J 2022 has now passed.
